Lucas in Lebanon!

The Top Five Things I Did or Saw in Beirut

5. The Roman Baths were interesting. They are baths made by the Romans. They were in the center of downtown Beirut in Lebanon. It was interesting to learn that the Romans took over the city. The baths aren’t standing anymore. They are just pillars now. The whole city forgot about the baths and they got buried. And then they dug it up later by mistake.

4. The desert was cool because it looks like you can find a lot of minerals in it. I saw it underneath the plane while I was looking at the tv screen on the plane. It was from the downward camera which is on the belly of the plane.

3. The ocean was nice. I got to go down near the water. It accidentally splashed me. I jumped on the rocks to get down. It is not a good place to surf. There was a lot of garbage in it but it was clear and you can find fish. I found about 14 of them or more. It was not like the ocean in America because it was always really high and it didn’t have sand, just rocks. It was the Mediterranean Sea.

2. We went to Byblos. It’s the oldest city in the world. At Byblos there would be more Roman ruins but the crusaders destroyed some of them. Roman ruins always have columns to hold up the roofs.I bought 2 fish fossils at Byblos. They are really cool and I can see them very clearly. They are the ancestor of the sardine which is armigates in Latin. The alphabet was invented in Byblos.

1. I saw a giant cave. It was cool. I saw stalagmites. They first found the lower grotto and then found the top grotto. We saw the top grotto first. It had stalagmites and stalactites. When we got to the end, it was really, really high. I got to touch 2 big crystals that they let people touch. I said, “You shall Not Pass,” which is in Lord of the Rings and it echoed really well cause I yelled it. It echoed back! At the lower grotto I got to ride a boat in the water. I put my hand in it. There were sharks in it. I didn’t get bit. Just kidding! There are not really sharks in and I didn’t get bit. There are no fish because there is no food in the water for them. It is the Jeita Grotto. I got to take a picture with a famous stone god sculpture there.

The Great Wall of China

By the way, did you know that I went to the Great Wall of China? The Great Wall was really fun. I counted 2,312 steps. It was a long, long walk. It seemed like it was endless.

The First Emperor, the Dragon King, was called the Dragon King because he chose the dragon as his symbol. He was very cruel. He took cheats, liars, scholars, and all sorts of people from their homes to go work on the Great Wall. Some of the workers died and got buried in the wall and some were also buried alive!

Life is really good here in China. I wish that I could see you more often or talk to you. It’s really fun. Me and my mom and dad go on an excursion almost each Saturday. My dad went to the Great Wall when he was here and me and mom were back in the United States like you are. I went to the Great Wall a few months after my dad with a field trip with school and my mom.

This is a picture of me with my best friend in China. His name is Thomas. He is from Scotland and Denmark. He lives across the street from me and is in second grade, too. He is in the classroom that is next door to me.

The Forbidden City

One day we went to the Forbidden City. It was super fun.

This is what the internet says about the city:

The Forbidden City is not actually a city at all, but the Imperial Palace complex in Beijing from which the Chinese emperors ruled their empire for centuries. It was called the Forbidden City because it was forbidden for commoners or even uninvited nobility to enter its sacred precincts.

The largest royal complex in the world, it was constructed over a fourteen year period, from 1407 to 1420, during the Ming Dynasty. It was the home and center of government for 24 emperors of China through the end of the Ming Dynasty and the entirety of the Qing (Ch'ing) Dynasty, until the overthrow of Imperial Rule in the early part of the Twentieth Century.

We saw the stairs that only the emperor could walk on. It had a big middle with a long dragon. That's where only the emperor walked.

I saw this cool gold design; it's one of the photo.

When we were there, we saw big courtyards and lots of buildings. The buildings can be called pagodas. A pagoda is "a tiered tower with multiple eaves common in China." My mother taught me that word.

That's all for now!!

My life in China

Ni Hao, Friends!

Mom
WHat
oh
umm
well
umm
can you erase that?

My mom is typing everything I say.
ya, umm.
uymm
sorry

Hi,
It's lucas.
I am having a fun time in china.
I like to play badminton with my new friends, which are Patrick, Thomas, and Aaron.
I am having a fun time at my school. there is a lot of equipment like a soccer fields, a basketball court, ropes you can play on, hula hoops and best of all, four-square.
People played that at my school in Cincinnati.

Every Saturday we go out on a new adventure.
Last Saturday we went to a cool art district. I posted that on Sunday.
We went to Lama Temple; I'll write about that later.
We went to the Forbidden City; I'll write about that later, too.
My favorite of all of them was Summer Palace.
And drum tower!

We have an ayi and a driver. My mom loves that. An ayi is someone who cleans the house and she does all out laundry and makes us dinner. I think that's my mom's favorite part!

I go to school by the bus. It's a little funny. I would be able to bike to school but it's a too busy road.

At school everyday, we start the day with a morning meeting. The morning meeting is where we do an activity and a greeting like a fist bump.

We have two recesses; they want us to learn about our bodies, motion and speed, and loco-motor skills at PE.

We have CHinese everyday. I learn new words like ni xihuan putao ma? which means "do you like grapes." If you like grapes, you answer "wo xihuan."

The best thing about school is the after school activities. On Monday I get to teach my origami class something from my origami books. On Tuesdays I have Great Wall runners, which is a running club. We have a big run on Thursday. It's called the Terry Fox Run.

My piano and guitar teacher is really good. His name is Andrew. He is 25. He teaches both. The other piano teacher didn't seem fun so we fired her.

AT school, we learned about dry ice one day.
When you pick it up with tongs it makes a sizzling sound like "ssssssssssssssssssssssssssss."
If you put it in a tennis ball container that holds 3 tennis balls and you put dry ice in it and water, too, and you put the top on it, it explodes the top off of it and the cap flies over the air.

Thank you for reading my blog.
I will be posting a lot more.
I miss you and wish you will write to me.

Zai jian!
